Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses (BPCG) is an educational charity operating from a former municipal greenhouse site in the centre of Lambeth’s Brockwell Park. Our 3750m2 site comprises a series of demonstration gardens and facilities including two commercial-sized greenhouses. Our activities include open access garden volunteering, school visits, family events, courses and workshops.
We are open to the public and for drop-in garden volunteering four days a week, Thursday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm (GMT) and to 5pm (BST). On Monday to Wednesday the site is available for nature based education sessions for children run on the site as closed and bookable sessions.
Our gardening activities are suitable for all types of people from the youngest to the oldest. We always have plenty of seated propagation and other nursery work to do for those who don’t want to be so active. Equally, for those who want a real work out, there’s soil to be dug, compost to be turned, trees to be pruned and many other jobs. Our large site is very varied, with woodland, many raised beds for veg growing, 2 commercial sized greenhouses, a wildlife pond, herb garden, natural dye plant section and a cob oven.
For those interested in helping on our kids’ and families’ nature based education programme Monday to Wednesday and on some Saturdays, we also always welcome voluntary assistance here too.
Our charity is currently run by a board of trustees and our part time staff (Community Gardener, Education Officer, Education Assistant, and a Director) and a dedicated band of over 100 volunteers.
BPCG offer throughout the year:
Activities for schools to help children learn about healthy-eating, nature and growing plants
Opportunities for volunteering and gaining new skills
Training and education courses and drop-in sessions
Tailored activities for children and adults with learning disabilities
A plant nursery growing and selling plants at affordable prices to the general public, local community gardens and schools
Community music and food events
A safe, beautiful, caring open space for volunteers and visitors to enjoy
We are very grateful to our funders who enable us to do our work and to plan for the future.
