iyatraQuartet & Basel Saleh (from the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians)
19 August 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm£6 - £9
The first of two wonderful Gigs at the Greenhouses this mid-August weekend…..
On Saturday afternoon, we welcome iyatraQuartet (violin, cello, bass clarinet, percussion) who are playing with Basel Salah from the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians.
No more pre-booking possible today but tickets are available at the gates.
Described as ‘one of the most exciting new music groups around at the moment’, iyatraQuartet are multi-instrumentalists who work collaboratively to create original, boundary-bending and joyful music. The London-based quartet have enjoyed recent performances at WOMAD (2016), Songlines Encounters Festival, Cambridge Big Weekend, Totally Thames Festival and London International Arts Festival, as well as multidisciplinary projects with contemporary dance, live poetry and film.
iyatraQuartet recorded a debut album in November 2015, recorded in the Union Chapel, London and received as a 5-star album choice by fRoots magazine and with a 4-star review in Songlines Magazine. The inspiration for ‘This World Alone’ evolved through working and performing with musicians and artists in London’s rich cultural scene. ‘iyatra’ comes from the Hindi word for ‘travel’ and ‘journey’: a concept that is embraced in the music. iyatraQuartet are working on new material for their eagerly awaited second album, due for release Spring 2018.
At this special gig, iyatraQuartet are playing with Basel Saleh from the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians. Basel has played with Damon Albarn as part of the Africa Express and we are delighted to welcome him to BPCG for the first time.
‘full of space and truth…that twist of Dolphy is brilliant’ Nigel Kennedy
‘a flavour of dizzy Balkan revelry’ Ivan Hewett, The Telegraph
