Bat Walk at Night

1 September 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

BPCG are excited to be hosting a Bat Walk in Brockwell Park, with the Bat Conservation Trust‘s Built Environment Officer, Jo Ferguson, also a member of London Bat Group.

We will start the evening by meeting at the Community Greenhouses at 7.30pm, and then walk to several key locations both at the greenhouses and within the wider park to find out more about these elusive mammals.

Brockwell Park is one of the very best places in Lambeth to see bats in action right through from spring to autumn every year. British bats, being insect eaters (insectivores), concentrate their evening and dawn hunting and feeding activity around sites they know are rich in flying insects. Because Brockwell Park, which includes the Community Greenhouses of course, is very rich in insect life and the numerous plants and trees that support them, bats have latched onto this and patrol most of the site, and not only for feeding but also to look for mates in the breeding season as they know it’s the place to be!

As well as the commoner British bats like the Pipistrelles, the park is often frequented by rarer species like Noctule, Leisler’s and Serotine bat. The ponds in the park, next to the Community Greenhouses, are also used by the rarely-seen Daubenton’s bat, also known as the ‘water bat’, which literally ‘skims’ the water’s surface to pick off emerging insects.

Using ultrasonic bat detectors, which help locate and identify bats, the walk will provide an exciting and informative introduction to the bats in Brockwell Park and London as a whole. Hopefully the bats will also make their presence felt in the Community Greenhouses, and enable participants to acquire the skills and confidence to continue to identify, record and monitor bats on a regular basis, so we can then measure and improve the health of the whole park for generations of bats and people to come.

Please bring appropriate clothes and footwear for weather conditions on the evening. Please also bring a torch.  Any well behaved children over 5 are welcome to come. But note that it is important that we are quiet so we do not disturb the bats. For safety reasons we will all be exiting the park at the end of the walk together through the Lido entrance, so please be prepared to stay until 9.30pm.

Please note this activity is weather dependant, so if it is forecast for bad weather we may have to change the date. In this event we will contact all those who have booked to let them know the day before.
