Let’s Make a Kitchen Garden in 10 Easy Steps – session 4
January 13 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
The kitchen garden or potager has been a staple of working peoples’ gardens for centuries. The kitchen garden uses plants grown from seed and intensive growing techniques to produce salads, greens, vegetables, fruits, seeds, edible flowers and flowers for cutting. We’ll be following the #no-dig method pioneered by Charles Dowding.
You can make a kitchen garden in a couple of window boxes, a balcony or patch outside your back door or your whole garden or allotment. We’re going to be making our kitchen garden in the beds around our seating circle just by the front gate. None of this area is in full sun just like most people’s gardens. The plot gradates from 1/2 sun to no sun at all.
A kitchen garden can be made really cheaply. We’ll be growing everything from seed and from a few cuttings of plants that we already have. When we sow seed there’ll be enough for you to take home a few seedlings to plant in your own space. Mostly we’ll be growing annuals but you’ll be able to collect seed after the first year. We aim to keep growing green food for most of the year.
The workshop takes place on one Sunday morning per month from October to July between 10 and 1pm. There will also be the chance to work with our Hot! border and our new perennial bed. If you follow the steps we do each month in the garden you’ll have your own productive space providing food and flowers for next summer.
