Year 2 Planning and Maintaining an Ornamental Border Workshop
9 October 2016 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pmFree
This is the second year of our series of workshops and will run for a three hour session on Sunday mornings once per month over the next year. It’s all about gaining the confidence to tackle your own garden or a community or school space that could do with a makeover. Feedback from the first twelve month’s participants has been very positive and we are now recruiting for the second year’s workshop. You can see some of the borders created by last year’s participants and with plants grown at the greenhouses here. This year’s Hot! border is reviewed here
We will be using the garden’s own 100 sq. m. ‘Hot!’ border in Brockwell Park’s walled garden as a model. The border was planted earlier in 2015 and whilst the core planting will remain there is still work to be done. We’ll also be doing maintenance on the border and you’ll learn nursery and propagation skills. The course will cover both theoretical material and practical gardening – so there will be some digging and quite a lot of nursery work. In the spring you’ll get to propagate a few plants for your own garden from seeds or rhizomes or divisions.
During the first session we will be looking at which plants are hardy, planning how to extend the life of the border, propagating some of the existing plants ready for overwintering and lifting the tender bananas prepping them for winter dormancy. We are going to be replacing two of the bananas with hardier species next year.
This series of monthly workshops will run over an entire year and will cover all aspects of planning and maintaining an ornamental border. Each workshop will be 3 hours running from 10.00am on a Sunday morning once per month. There is a maximum of 12 spaces for this workshop so whilst tickets are free they are limited so please sign up for a free ticket below now if you’re interested
