SUMMARY:WORKSHOP | Introduction to Mexican Embroidery: Tenango
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first workshop in our new series Introduction to Mexican Embroidery\, where we’ll explore the rich textile traditions of different regions in Mexico. In this session\, we’ll focus on Tenango embroidery\, a colourful and expressive style that originates from the town of Tenango de Doria\, in the state of Hidalgo. \nThis embroidery style is rooted in the Otomi community’s traditional techniques\, with motifs often inspired by local flora\, fauna\, and mythology. Although the practice dates back to pre-Columbian Mesoamerica\, modern Tenango embroidery emerged in the 1960s\, when local women began creating embroidered textiles in response to economic hardship. Today\, the style is recognised around the world for its vibrant designs and cultural significance\, and continues to be produced by individual families and women’s cooperatives. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll learn about the background and symbolism of Tenango embroidery and create a simple\, nature-inspired design. The embroidery will be done on a cotton tote bag. If you already have a tote bag at home you’d like to decorate\, feel free to bring it along—there’s no need to add to your collection if you’ve already got a favourite! \nAll materials will be provided. This session is suitable for beginners and anyone curious about embroidery or Mexican craft traditions.\nTea and biscuits will be provided. \nINFORMATION \nTickets: Standard price £30 / Concession £24 \nRunning time: 2 hours \nAge recommendation: 16+ \nIf viewing on a phone please scroll to the bottom of the page to book.
