SUMMARY:Gig at the Greenhouses: A Night of Nature in Film & Music\, with Alice Boyd & the RSPB
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a cosy\, intimate evening of film and music inspired by the natural world. \nThe night begins with a screening of Return\, a new RSPB film celebrating the comeback of the white-tailed eagle to the UK’s skies. Featuring voices including sound artist Alice Boyd\, RSPB ambassador Dave Sexton and Flock Together’s Nadeem Perera\, the film tells a powerful story of resilience\, rewilding and our relationship with nature. \nAfter the screening\, Alice will perform a 30-40 minute set with her band\, weaving together folk-inspired harmonies\, ambient electronics and field recordings. \nAlice Boyd is a musician and sound artist based in South London. Her work explores our interconnectedness with the natural world and reveals the hidden sounds of our environments. She created the BBC Radio 4 documentary Shifting Soundscapes\, retracing the footsteps of field recordist Martyn Stewart\, and produces Found Sounds\, a monthly series for Ffern’s As the Season Turns podcast. Her practice spans music\, performance and spatial installations\, with projects for organisations including the RSPB\, Kew’s Wakehurst\, Eden Project and TOAST. \nThis special evening at Brockwell Greenhouses offers a chance to gather in community\, experience the story of the white-tailed eagle\, and sink into a performance that explores our interconnectedness with the living world. \nPhoto © Caitlin Warren \nINFORMATION \nTicket price: \nFull price – £15\nConcession – £12 \nFood:\n£8 per person for a hot vegetarian meal \nTimings:\n5.00pm – Gates open\n5.30pm – Screening begins\n6.00pm – Break\n6.20pm – Music\n7.00pm – Finish \nIf viewing on a phone\, scroll to the bottom of the page to book \nTo save paper\, do not print your ticket. SUMMARY:Gig at the Greenhouses | Jali Bakary Konteh
DESCRIPTION:BPCG is delighted to welcome world-renowned kora player Jali Bakary Konteh to our Spring Sessions. The latest torchbearer for his family’s kora legacy on the world stage\, like his father and grandfather before him\, Jali Bakary brings his own personal touch and innovations to traditional songs with unique melodic and rhythmic arrangements. \nJali Bakary is the grandson and son\, respectively\, of the legendary Gambian kora players Alhaji Bai Konte (who helped to bring kora music to the wider world with his iconic album Kora Melodies From the Republic of the Gambia\, West Africa in 1973) and Dembo Konte. As Banning Eyre has put it\, “it is difficult to overstate the regal\, nearly divine\, stature” of the Konte family in the echelons of West African music. \nBorn into this remarkable musical lineage and steeped in Gambia’s griot tradition\, Jali Bakary is the latest torchbearer for his family’s kora legacy on the world stage. He has performed extensively throughout West and North Africa\, as well as in the UK\, the rest of Europe (WOMAD\, Roskilde Festival\, Kings Place\, Barbican\, Southbank Centre)\, Middle East and USA. \nAlthough the kora tradition has changed a lot over the last half a century\, it always moves forward. Like his father and grandfather before him\, Jali Bakary brings his own personal touch and innovations to traditional songs with unique melodic and rhythmic arrangements. \nA hugely versatile musician\, he regularly performs solo\, as well as with his own band\, Minyanta\, and Balimaya Project – a new 16 piece collective who fuse West-African folkloric music and jazz. Jali Bakary released his debut album\, Konteh Kunda\, in 2010 and his self-released album Jali Bakary Konteh available on many platforms in 2023. He currently lives in London. \n‘An exceptional purveyor of the Gambian tradition’ Afropop Worldwide\n‘it is difficult to overstate the regal\, nearly divine\, stature’ of the Konteh family in the echelons of West African music’ Banning Eyre\nINFORMATION \nTicket Price: \n£15 standard price\n£12 concessions\nKids under 6 go free \nFood:\n£8 per person for a hot vegetarian meal \nTimings: \n6.00pm – Gates open\n6.30pm – Music starts\n7.15pm – Break\n7.45pm – Music\n8.30pm – Finish \nIf viewing on a phone\, scroll to the bottom of the page to book \nTo save paper\, do not print your ticket. SUMMARY:Gig at the Greenhouses | Alice Boyd EP Launch - Cloud Walking
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a cosy\, intimate evening of music inspired by the natural world\, as Alice Boyd launches her second EP\, Cloud Walking. As the night draws in\, gather for an atmospheric performance bringing the sounds of the mountains to Brockwell park. This twilight gig will offer a moment of warmth and reflection as we head into winter\, exploring connection to landscape and the art of slowing down. \nAlice Boyd is a singer-songwriter and sound artist based in South London. Her music intertwines folk-inspired harmonies\, ambient electronics and field recordings to ponder the intersection of human life and the landscapes we call home.  \nFor this early evening gig\, Alice and her band will present her second EP Cloud Walking\, inspired by a journey into Scotland’s Cairngorm mountains. In September 2023\, Alice Boyd and eight other women retraced the footsteps of pioneering Scottish nature writer Nan Shepherd. Over four days\, they hiked\, camped and faced the elements\, drawing inspiration and solace from the landscape and Shepherd’s writing. \nBlending folk inspired vocal harmonies and instrumentation with field recordings captured during the trip\, the EP captures the emotional highs and lows of being immersed in the mountains. These songs reflect not just the journey through the Cairngorms\, but the deeper exploration of self that can happen when we step out of the everyday. \nWith contributions from a number of Alice’s musical collaborators\, Cloud Walking is a reflection on connecting to landscape and the art of slowing down. Alice will be joined by her band Daisy Russell and Jacob Norris for this performance.  \nVinyls and CDs of Cloud Walking will be available to purchase at the gig\, or you can pre-order these via Alice’s website: www.aliceboyd.info \nFind out more at www.aliceboyd.info or follow Alice on social media: @aliceboydmusic. \nPhoto credit: Caitlin Warren \nINFORMATION \nTicket Price: £15 standard price£12 concessionsUnder 12s go free \nFood/Drink:The bar will be open with cake\, hot chocolate and mulled wine\, as well as our selection of cocktails\, local beers and wines.  \nTimings: 5.00pm – Gates open5.30pm – Music starts6.15pm – Break6.45pm – Music7.30pm – Finish \nIf viewing on a phone\, scroll to the bottom of the page to book \nTo save paper\, do not print your ticket. Just bring it along on your phone and/or we have a list of all attendees. \nSupport act | Catrin Vincent \nCatrin Vincent’s voice is incomparable. Androgynous\, lurching\, disorienting\, it is delivered as if her very life depends on it. A Guardian journalist wrote of being “dumbstruck” when she first heard it.” – Alexandra Pollard wrote in the Independent in 2020. Catrin is part of the four-piece ‘Another Sky’\, a uniquely powerful band formed out of a love for the latter two Talk Talk albums. Her venture into a solo project begins. \nWe put on our Gigs at the Greenhouses to let people hear brilliant music\, enjoy our lovely gardens and to raise money so that the community can benefit from BPCG seven days a week. \nGetting to Us \nBPCG is in the middle of Brockwell Park\, between the tennis courts and the walled gardens.
