Live Music, Yoga, Terrariums and Onion Marmalade

On Wednesday summer evenings in July and early August, we invite you to the gardens to have a musical wander around the gardens between 5pm and 7pm. iyatraQuartet will be playing their ‘absolutely beautiful’ music (Cerys Mathews BBC 6 Music) inside the Upper Greenhouse in an open rehearsal.  You will need to stay outside the greenhouse but you will be able to hear and see really well through all the open windows and doors.  Refreshments also available including samples of cocktails made by local cocktail supremo Nicolas Medicamento using BPCG herbs. These should be lovely evenings! Please book for £5 in advance here or risk it and make a card payment on the gate.  Keep your eyes peeled on the website and in these updates for more live music coming up in August…

This week in the garden, the raspberries are ready for their first proper harvest and there is one last currant bush to harvest from. Then the nets and the fruit cage can be carefully taken down and put away until next year.

In the woodland the canes of loganberries that have fruited need to be cut back and the new canes tied in. We will also tie in our vine tomatoes.

We will be pruning the two grape vines in the herb garden and making cuttings from some of the material we remove. In order to protect some of their ripening fruits we will put nets over some of the grapes and also over the lower branches of the greengage tree. The edges of the pond also need a good weed.

We will take herb cuttings, of French lavender, Cotton lavender and Sage and put them in our heated propagator/ mist unit to encourage rapid root growth.

Last week, we gave the lemon verbena plants a good prune so we now have lots of dried lemon verbena leaves to jar up.  On Saturday we are also going to have a go at making sticky onion marmalade from all the wonderful onions we harvested.

A shout out for odds and sods cups and mugs….We would love any of your small ceramic cups or mugs that you might have spare for us to use for potting up our succulents, or if you spot any good’uns in charity shops, snap them up and we will reimburse you.

Do you have any children’s books for 2 and 3 year olds that you would like to give to BPCG?  We will read these and devise play themes around them at our Tuesday morning Story Stompers sessions.  Books that involve animals and wildlife would be great! Think Hungry Caterpillar, Peter Rabbit, Owl Babies, The Tiny Seed etc… Thank you!
