This week in the garden

Even though it is cooler this week than last, we need to keep up our watering both in the greenhouses and outside too especially with any new planting, young seedlings and any plants in pots (especially small pots).

There’s also still work to do on completing our leaky hose pipe installations through-out the site. Once this is completed, it is going to save us a lot of time watering and with the water getting immediately to the plant’s roots, should make for some happy healthy plants.  Chris is leading on this so he’s the man to talk to for directions.  There are exciting developments in the lower greenhouse where we are excavating a deeper pit to accommodate a rain water collection tank which will provide water for the drip irrigation system for the Gourds display.

We also need to woodchip the paths to suppress weeds.

And there’s plenty of seed sowing to do both inside the greenhouse and outside in our raised beds.

In other BPCG news,

Massive congratulations to Andy who was runner up last night in in the Farm Garden Local Hero Awards in the Time Hero Category. This was hugely deserved, and a tribute to all the amazing time and creativity Andy brings to BPCG. Thank you Andy!

We need sturdy paper bags to put our plants in which we are selling at Herne Hill Market this Sunday 29th.  Please bring! As well as any spare newspaper.  (there’s a no plastic policy at the market so no plastic bags allowed)

We have three lovely workshops coming up this weekend for which there are still spaces.

On Saturday April 28th, 11 to 1, Andy is running a free workshop where you can “Learn to Make a Planter”.  It’s free but do book so we know you are coming.

On Sunday April 29th, 11 to 12.30,  Cat is running her fifth Creative Garden workshop “Flowers – the inside Story”. It’s free but do book so we  know you are coming

On Sunday April 29th, 1pm to 2.30pm, there are still 3 free places to join in the communal bread making workshop.  Book here

On Sunday April 29th, we will be having our monthly volunteer meeting at 4pm at the Greenhouses. If you have anything you’d like to put on the agenda for this, please let Kate know. So far, on the agenda, is a Green Woodworking update from Paul, Watering, May Fete 12th May and Herne Hill Free Film Festival May 13th evening (helpers needed on the bar).

On Wednesday 2nd May 5.30pm, we are meeting up to fine tune our May Fete on May 12th. Please come along to the Greenhouses if you can. Beer and salty snacks will be there to help us along!  If you can’t come 2nd May,  but are able to help out on May 12th, please let Kate know.  If you can’t make it on 12th, we also welcome contributions of cakes or biscuits for the tea time feast we are offering!

On Thursday May 3rd 10.00am to dusk (!) we are having a final push on getting the decking platform finished in time for May 12th.  Please put this in your diary if you are able to come along and brush up your carpentry and painting skills!

On Sunday May 13th from 8pm the Herne Hill Free Film Festival is showing Little Shop of Horrors at BPCG as well as Vron Harris’s film of BPCG through the seasons.  We are running a botanical bar (rhubarb bellinis, and mojitos).  We will need people to help on the bar as well as with getting the site ready for the film showing and clearing up afterwards.
** Contact Kate if you’d like to be involved.

Looking forward to seeing you in the gardens soon.
