SUMMARY:The Gardening Year: Kitchen Garden Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The kitchen garden or potager has been a staple of working peoples’ gardens for centuries. The kitchen garden uses plants grown from seed and intensive growing techniques to produce salads\, greens\, vegetables\, fruits\, seeds\, edible flowers and flowers for cutting. You can make a kitchen garden in a couple of window boxes\, a balcony or patch outside your back door or your whole garden or allotment. \nA kitchen garden can be made really cheaply. We’ll be growing everything from seed. When we sow seed there’ll be enough for you to take home a few seedlings to plant in your own space. Mostly we’ll be growing annuals but you’ll be able to collect seed after the first year. We aim to keep growing food plants through out the year. \nWe will be working on two dedicated Kitchen Garden beds one which will be grown for the public to come and pick their own and the other for you to grow and harvest its produce at the monthly workshops. \nIf you follow the steps we do each month in your garden you’ll have your own productive space providing food and flowers for next summer. \nINFORMATION \nCourse dates: 15 Oct\, 19 Nov\, 17 Dec\, 21 Jan\, 18 Feb\, 17 March\, 21 April\, 19 May\, 16 June & 21 July.\nIf you sign up for this workshop we expect that you will be able to attend the majority of the sessions. \nTimes: 10am – 1pm \nTicket price: Pay What You Can (Recommended Price £35) \nRunning time: 3 hours with a tea break \nThe course takes place on the third Sunday morning of the month from 10am until 1pm from October until July 2024. There are 14 places available. There is a booking fee for this course and we are offering a Pay What You Can Scheme for these workshops to make them accessible to everyone. \nPay What You Can \nWe know that ticket price is a huge barrier for some\, and the Pay What You Can model offers people who can afford to pay a bit more the chance to support others who can’t. The fee for this course has a sliding scale of £50\, £35\, £20\, £12\, £5. Once you have booked there are no further charges for the year.

SUMMARY:The Gardening Year: Border Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is a long-standing workshop that has so far designed and planted the garden’s front Gate borders\, the Seating Circle border\, the Sensory bed in the Herb Garden\, the ‘Oudolf’ border in front of the deck\, and the Hot Border in the walled garden. This course is designed to build confidence in a range of gardening jobs and to think about the style of your overall garden. This group maintains most of the ornamental planting around the garden. \nOver the next 10 months\, on the first Sunday of the month\, we will be transforming the borders along the sloping path leading to the Barn’s side entrance. You’ll be part of the planning process for this area. There is also quite a lot of adjusting and fine tuning to do in the planting of all the other borders. By the end of the series\, you’ll have worked on at least four borders of different styles and will have the confidence to tackle a makeover in your own garden. \nThis is a chance to follow gardening through its full yearly cycle. If you sign up for this workshop we expect that you will be able to attend the majority of the sessions. \nINFORMATION \nCourse dates: 8 Oct\, 5 Nov\, 3 Dec\, 7 Jan\, 4 Feb\, 3 March\, 7 April\, 5 May\, 2 June\, 7 July.\nIf you sign up for this workshop we expect that you will be able to attend the majority of the sessions. \nTimes: 10am – 1pm \nTicket price: Pay What You Can (Recommended Price £35) \nRunning time: 3 hours with a tea break \nThe course takes place on the first Sunday morning of the month from 10am until 1pm and runs from October until July 2024. SUMMARY:The Gardening Year: Composting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:We produce 30 tons of compost every year and it doesn’t make itself. Successful composting requires attention to the particle size and relative composition of the heap between green and brown waste as well as ensuring that the heap is aerated. \nWe rot our horse manure pretty successfully getting the internal temperature of the heap up to 65 degrees C.\, but our own green garden waste is harder to get up to this temperature. We need the high temperature to kill off any weed seeds in the compost otherwise\, when we use it as a mulch\, we are just spreading weeds around the garden. \nThe group will be led by Tony Davis – our compost curator with support from Cat our community gardener. This is a practical and strenuous workshop as we’ll be turning the heaps regularly and we’ll also be reducing the overall particle size in the heap by chopping\, cutting and breaking up compostable material into smaller pieces. In order to do this cutting and chopping it is important to keep our tools sharp. Cat will offer regular refreshers tool sharpening demonstrations during the group’s tea breaks! You’ll also learn to use our chipper/shredder to reduce brush wood to shreds to layer among the green waste. \nThis group also takes responsibility of looking after our wormery. Worms are essential primary decomposers and the wormery is an important educational tool used by our Children and Families team to teach children about the living environment. \nINFORMATION \nCourse dates: 10 Sept\, 15 Oct\, 12 Nov\, 10 Dec\, 14 Jan\, 11 Feb\, 10 March\, 14 April\, 12 May\, 9 June\,  & 14 July. \nTimes: 10am – 1pm \nTicket price: Pay What You Can \nRunning time: 3 hours with a tea break \nThe course runs from September until July and\, since there is only so much space in the composting area\, is limited to 10 participants. It will run on the 2nd Sunday of the month between 10am – 1pm. This workshop is for registered BPCG volunteers\, with an optional fee of £20\, £12\, £5.
