seeds, pizzas, fermenting and a new office

This week in the garden, we will be planting out our ornamental alliums in the gate borders. There is more sieving of compost to do, to top up the upper four crop vegetable beds ready for direct seed sowing into them around the middle of March.

We will be sowing a lot more seeds including a collection of companion plants for the garden – nasturtiums, french marigolds, and Nicotianna tabacum, the tobacco plant.We will also sow more chillies: Bulgarian Carrot, Ring of Fire, Nosterata, and Hungarian Black.

In the upper woodland wildlife area we will sow an attractive ‘green manure’ with feathery leaves and attractive blue flowers called Phacelia. Bees are particularly fond of it!

We’re going to be publishing our month’s job list at the beginning of every month so by the year end we should have a really good description of all the work we have done in the garden and of many of the plants that we have grown.

Jelena’s next adult Fermentation workshop is on Saturday March 16th 1.30pm to 4pm. This is a paid for workshop which you can book here. There are two free spaces for BPCG volunteers so if you are interested in learning about fermentation and can help Jelena with some prepping from 12.30pm and clearing up afterwards, please let Kate know on director@brockwellgreenhouses.org.uk  Jelena’s fermentation workshops will take place every 3rd Saturday of the month throughout 2019.

This month we’re excited to be moving into the new office which Andy and David have created in our old tool container. We’re looking for a volunteer to assemble 3 x flat-packed IKEA desks this week or next. If you’ve the experience and desire to do this please let Chris know at chair@brockwellgreenhouses.org.uk

We’re also looking forward to firing up the cob oven for pizza making! From April onwards we’ll be running monthly pizza days for kids and adults. We’ve got a new and improved decking area to host more people, and are in need of recruits to help roll dough, make toppings and wield the baker’s peel! It’s a lovely Sunday afternoon activity, starting at 11am and finishing around 3pm, and the pizza team would love your help.

Our 2019 pizza dates are 14/4, 11/5 (May Fete),16/5, 14/7, 18/8, 22/9, 19/10(Harvest Festival)  – if you’re interesting in helping or need more info, email Emma on: emmamaymee@hotmail.com. Helpers oget their own freshly made pizza as a thank you for each session!

Last Sunday, the Renovate! team did wonders in the Lower Greenhouse and the guttering on the North side as well as the floor cracks have now been fixed. In mid-March, London Business School is sending a team that will resurface the cold frame. Next month’s Renovate! will be on Sunday 31st March.
