Natural Dye Plant Walk

*** IF YOU STILL WISH TO COME TO THIS, THERE ARE A FEW TICKETS AVAILABLE ON THE GATE FROM METTE, BUT NO MORE ONLINE BOOKING, SORRY! ***

Come take a walk to discover the numerous flowers, leaves, roots, and barks growing in Brockwell Park and the Greenhouse Dye garden, that can be used to create natural dyes and colour. We’ll start off in the BPCG dye garden and then go for a wander in Brockwell Park to identify a number of trees or plants that give long-lasting wonderful colours on animal fibres like wool and silk.

There will be a short session at the end demonstrating materials that have been harvested previously and/or purchased and the lovely colours that can be achieved on wool and silk.

This session would be a good introduction for people who are curious about dyeing with natural materials and/or for more experienced dyers who want to learn more about what native/local plants are suitable for dyeing.

Note that this session does not involve any hands-on dyeing nor any gathering of material.

There are 2 free tickets on this workshop for BPCG volunteers.  Please contact Kate on director@brockwellgreenhouses.org.uk if you would like one of these!

This walk is led by Mette Lindahl-Wise, an indie dyer based in Herne Hill. She draws on the British approach to dyeing with natural materials as well as on the Scandinavian tradition which can be traced back to the Viking ages.

Seasonal Dyeing – Summer

This is a short introduction to natural dyeing on wool with a more seasonal focus on locally available plants specific to the season. We’ll cover preparing the fibre, preparing and dyeing with natural dye baths and keeping records of dye experiments.  We’ll also look at gathering and storing natural dyestuffs which are in season.

Please note that this is an evening course.

All participants will receive samples of wool that we’ve dyed in the workshop.

Christmas Wreaths and Table Centre-Piece Workshop

SORRY THIS WORKSHOP IS NOW SOLD OUT!

Come and try your hand at making Christmas Wreaths and Table-Centre Pieces!

We will collect all sorts of natural materials from our gardens like seed heads, pods and cones and ‘gourdgeous’ decorative gourds. Once you start looking, it’s amazing what you can spot that will look great on a wreath or Christmas table. And it’s great fun trying out different combinations and interweaving them together.

Feel free to bring along any materials with you to mix and match with what we have already got.

Don’t worry if you think you aren’t particularly arty or crafty – it really doesn’t matter! Somehow it always work out fine. Nature’s little Christmas gift to us perhaps! And don’t worry if you can only stay for an hour or two, the window of 11 to 3 is to enable people to drop in for as long or as little as they need to make their wreath(s) or table decoration(s).

Your £6 booking fee (£4 concessions) entitles you to take one wreath or table centre-piece home with you.  If you would like to take more than one home, then please make a further cash donation per piece on the day.  Note, if you do not want to take a wreath or table centre-piece home with you, but simply want to make things and leave them at the greenhouses, then just book a free ticket.

Hope to see you on Thursday any time from 11am to 3pm.

Suitable for adults and children (concessionary prices apply to under 12s)
