Fermenting Fun: Goodbye to Winter!

Join in our family fermentation fun at the Greenhouses with this Saturday workshop!

We will be saying goodbye to winter by taking the tour of the gardens, then tasting and making roots sauerkraut and fizzy probiotic drink. It is the time of year to use up our winter roots, and turn them into something yummy and healthy for the whole family. Children can gather whatever herbs are available at the garden at the time to add to their fermented vegetables. You will take home a delicious jar of sauerkraut, and water kefir grains to make your own yummy drink at home.

Please remember to bring one half a litre jar + one small jar to the workshop.

This session will be hosted by fantastic local macrobiotic and whole foods chef Jelena Belgrave @potsandfoodtoshare

£6 per child / £3.00 low-income. This workshop must be booked in advance using our online ticketing system (see below).

Please provide ages of children and details of any allergies, medical conditions or additional needs in the ‘additional notes’ box when booking. Please note, all children must be supervised by a participating adult in this family workshop.

By registering for this event, you will automatically be added to our family events mailing list. You can unsubscribe from the list at any time using the ‘unsubscribe’ link in emails.

Ferment Your Christmas!

Join us at the Greenhouses for a relaxed and communal Sunday workshop on fermentation where we will learn how to make seasonal ferments for your Christmas table – Kimchi, Sauerkraut and Kefir.

We will talk about the importance and benefits of lacto-fermentation while chopping, grating and squeezing. Everyone will have a chance to taste different home-made ferments and discuss how we can include them in our daily diet beyond the holiday season. No prior knowledge of fermentation is necessary and any questions about the process are welcome.

You will make and take away a jar of each of these:

Brussels sprouts Kimchi

Chipotle Sauerkraut

“Mulled wine” lemonade water Kefir

Half of the workshop proceeds will go to the Greenhouses to support our work and the other half towards fundraising for Jelena’s nephew Jude’s operation to help him learn how to walk. You can read about little Jude and cerebral palsy here.

Ferment Your Christmas will be run by Jelena Belgrave, a trained macrobiotic and wholefoods chef with a passion for fermentation.  Jelena has run very popular Family Fermentation workshops for children at the Greenhouses.  This time it’s the grown ups’ turn!

Jelena trained with the world-renowned macrobiotic counsellor Simon Brown between 2009 and 2011. After 12 years in news and current affairs, Jelena left her job at the BBC to pursue her passion for food full time.  Jelena has in recent years led numerous macrobiotic and wholefood cooking and fermentation workshops, published nutritious recipes in the Serbian magazine Sensa, worked with private clients and wrote a bi-lingual blog for a while, focusing on healthier food choices for the whole family.

Squash Roast Up

During Urban Food Fortnight, for this Saturday lunch, we are going to fire up our cob oven and roast the yummy courgettes, marrows and squashes we’ve grown in our gardens. Seasoned with our garlic, onions, tomatoes and herbs and served with some home-baked sourdough bread, it should be pretty delicious.  For pudding, we’ll have grapes grown in our Upper Greenhouse.

You’ll also be able to marvel at our our ornamental Gourds which will be getting bigger and better by the day in our Gorgeous Gourds exhibition in our lower Greenhouse. Check out the swan gourd, the bottle neck gourd and many more!

There are just a few tickets left to buy on the gates today.  Find us in the lower garden by the Cob Oven!
