Natural Dye Plant Walk

Come take a walk to discover the numerous flowers, leaves, roots, and barks growing in Brockwell Park and the Greenhouse Dye garden, that can be used to create natural dyes and colour. We’ll start off in the BPCG dye garden and then go for a wander in Brockwell Park to identify a number of trees or plants that give long-lasting wonderful colours on animal fibres like wool and silk.

There will be a short session at the end demonstrating materials that have been harvested previously and/or purchased and the lovely colours that can be achieved on wool and silk.

This session would be a good introduction for people who are curious about dyeing with natural materials and/or for more experienced dyers who want to learn more about what native/local plants are suitable for dyeing.

Note that this session does not involve any hands-on dyeing nor any gathering of material.

There are 2 free tickets on this workshop for BPCG volunteers.  Please contact Kate on director@brockwellgreenhouses.org.uk if you would like one of these!

This walk is led by Mette Lindahl-Wise, an indie dyer based in Herne Hill. She draws on the British approach to dyeing with natural materials as well as on the Scandinavian tradition which can be traced back to the Viking ages.

Seasonal Dyeing – Summer

This is a short introduction to natural dyeing on wool with a more seasonal focus on locally available plants specific to the season. We’ll cover preparing the fibre, preparing and dyeing with natural dye baths and keeping records of dye experiments.  We’ll also look at gathering and storing natural dyestuffs which are in season.

Please note that this is an evening course.

All participants will receive samples of wool that we’ve dyed in the workshop.
