At any time of the year, there are always lots of tasks to do in the garden and greenhouses. So we always need volunteers to come and help out. If you are new to gardening, that is absolutely fine. We hope we will be able to teach you something about gardening. We are a friendly bunch who love to share the joys of gardening, and often over a cup of tea.
Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting mucky and suitable boots or shoes. If you have gardening gloves, please bring these with you. If not, don’t worry, we can lend you gloves. Best to bring something along to eat if you are staying through lunch. We have a small kitchen with a hob and a microwave so feel free to bring anything along you’d like to heat up.
All year round, we create new plants from seeds and from cuttings. We also compost all our garden waste, turning and sieving it and using it to condition our beds. In the warmer months, it’s mostly propagating, weeding, harvesting and selling plants which keeps us busy. In the colder months, we prepare planting plans, clean down the greenhouses, prune trees and bushes, mend paths and write interesting signage for our visitors. We also make pickles, jams and do other bits of food preservation. Making Christmas wreaths is a big thing for us too!

More Volunteers needed for our Kids Outdoor Learning and Play Sessions!
We need more volunteers to help us in our expanding programme of school visits and family activities. If you enjoy working with children or aspire to work in the fields of education and play, becoming one of our schools and families volunteers could be the ideal volunteering opportunity for you. We are particularly looking for daytime volunteers Monday-Wednesday but we also run some Saturday workshops.
